This issue we speak to Daniel Hopkins, Director of innovative construction industry solution provider Metex Online, a firm setting its sights on CI…
Metex might be unknown to a lot of our readers, so can you introduce yourself and the company, please?
Metex is a UK SME created by two individuals both with 30+ years’ experience in the construction industry. The two senior Directors, one a long-term entrepreneur with many years of building construction material supply businesses and the other a forward-thinking product design engineer with a passion for construction. They both share a desire to fill the many gaps with products that make a significant difference to site personnel in terms of how easy they are to use, how functional they are and also how competitive they can be manufactured, without compromising on their quality ethos
Ample experience in the construction industry, then. How do you see that benefitting the Custom Install industry?
Metex try and listen firstly and that’s what they see as the key to growing strong and long-term customer relationships. In construction, all trades people develop their own ways of overcoming problems, what Metex do is understand the problem from the bottom up and, if viable, design, prototype and manufacture a commercial product that has been derived from an internal need within the industry. The trick is then to make it visible, which when running an SME with a limited budget can be a real challenge. If you take Corefix as the strong example for the Custom Installer, Metex know that expanding the range and offering additional products that are able to cope with many applications is critical as it won’t only be a 10mm gap between the plasterboard and block and with thermally insulated plasterboard becoming more common this is also being investigated
How do you keep Metex on the cutting-edge of the construction world, how do you develop your products?
Metex like to be noisy as well as being good listeners and are currently developing some products at the request of a national concrete supplier to support the launch of a new product – why would they use us? Metex guess that a customer becomes confident in them over time in that they will deliver on their promises and develop a product that works for the customer and their customer base – they don’t just listen, but are very proactive in their approach and, where possible, like to be very inventive. As well as trying to improve on existing products, such products as Pipefall and Pipetak are a new take that we created to solve existing site issues; so Pipefall is an easy way to check a pipe gradient and Pipetak a great and competitive way to secure UFH pipes for one-off projects
So, if one of our readers was about to start work on installing, say, a home cinema, what Metex products would you recommend to help get the job done?
Corefix is their sole product that fits within the AV market, although as mentioned above this range is expanding for launch in early 2018. With TVs growing in size and Corefix being tested up to 250kg on 4x fixings there’s still some scope for TVs to get larger, the product won’t only support the TV though its suitable for large speakers, cabinets etc and is fast becoming the product of choice with some of the UK’s best-known AV product distributors
And how quickly can you deliver?
The product is available via stockists and distributors who have large bespoke trade counters, so collection is immediate from these outlets. Online channels include Amazon and eBay as well as dedicated websites that will dispatch the same day on a 2/3-day service – although for a small fee a next day delivery service is available.
Finally, will you be releasing any future products directly targeting custom installers?
Yes, Metex have other products on the horizon for this market and as they understand this market better there will no doubt be other exciting ‘fixings’ developments.
