Kimber Kable Indulges

Published: Monday, September 18, 2017

Russ Andrews, exclusive UK distributor for Kimber Kable, is using the forthcoming Indulgence Show to launch the Kimber Axios USB cable, created to extract the best out of computer audio systems and portable digital audio players.

Building on the phenomenal success of the Axios headphone cables, which have been a very popular recent addition to the Kimber range, the Axios USB is a 2.0 format USB cable which has been designed from the ground up. The company’s research into high frequency digital data transmission has resulted in particular care and attention being paid to the shielding of the data and power conductors. The 24AWG data cables are shielded independently of the power lines, with a silver-plated copper shield that covers 95% of the cable, which, within the USB plugs, is bonded to the inner circumference via a mechanical crimp and silver-doped conductive epoxy. The benefit of this carefully designed shielding is ultra-low signal loss and stable impedance. The familiar Kimber geometry is used for the power lines, which consist of eight wires that are woven to reject extraneous noise. The design and construction means that it can be used in lengths up to 6.0-metres, where most cables are limited to a maximum length of 5.0-metres.

In keeping with the design established by the Axios headphone cable, the new USB cable is highly flexible, making routing it from computer to DAC both simple and devoid of any potential mechanical noise interference that the traditionally stiffer USB cables can exhibit.

Each Axios USB cable is hand-built at Kimber’s facility in Ogden, Utah and takes a full two days to produce. Attention to detail is key, with the cables finished off with hand-polished wood accents on the USB plugs, which can be specified as Type A, B, C or Micro B. Connection configurations are to be specified at the time of ordering and can be A to B, A to Micro B, A to C or C to C for the newest pieces of equipment.

Russ Andrews, chairman and technical director, says of the new cable, “Computer audio has really come into its own over the past few years, yet much of the data transmission has been carried out using standard computer cables that are not designed for the intricacies and intimate detail of music. With Axios, Kimber has addressed this as only it can do. Designed from the ground up with all the company’s knowledge of audio cables and passion for music, the new Axios USB takes computer music to the next level.” He continues, “As one eminent US reviewer put it, ‘He (Ray Kimber) has done one thing more the others do not do. The Kimber Kable Axios USB sounds analogue’, which is a glowing testament to just how good this new cable is. We are looking forward to sharing it with our visitors at The Indulgence Show.”

Kimber Axios USB starts at £710 for 0.5-metres.

Russ Andrews can be found in Room 324 on the 3rd Floor of Novotel London West at The Indulgence Show, 29 September – 1 October.
