GfK have concluded that over the five weeks leading up to January 5th of this year, CE and IT products saw a value sales increase of 7 per cent, compared with 2.3 per cent over general retail.
Unfortunately for high street retailers though, while that same period saw online sales grow by 50 per cent, bricks-and-mortar stores witnessed a mere 3.5 per cent increase, along with much higher rates of price deflation. According to GfK's research, consumers seem more willing to pay a higher price for a high-spec product online than off.

This is vividly illustrated by sales of LCD TVs over the Christmas period. While the average price of an online sale was only 4 per cent lower compared to Christmas 2006, for retail stores this year-on-year drop amounted to 16 per cent. The gap between online and offline product mixes therefore continues to widen. As GfK Senior Account Manager Matthew Gibbs explains, “[Around] one flatpanel TV was sold every two seconds in December – good news for consumer electronics retailers, but a purchase online was worth £90 more to retailers than those on the high street.”
