In September, visitors to the Park Inn were greeted by a veritable feast of brands, all keen to demonstrate the latest kit.
Along with audio clinics, hosted by show organiser, the Chester Group, this year’s event featured demonstrations by renowned recording engineer Tony Faulkner, who treated attendees to hi-def examples of his latest work. Highlighting the fact that this remains a show for enthusiasts, Keith Monks was also on hand to give vinyl owners the opportunity to have their favourite record professionally cleaned.
There were a number of highlights at the first show under the new banner, one of which was a world first as Roksan unveiled the latest additions to its Kandy range, the Kandy K2 AV integrated amplifier and matching CD-player. Designed to offer audio bliss at a low cost, both sport a distinctive new look, come with an LCD screen remote and carry a price tag of £750. Also presenting a new integrated amp was AstinTrew with the AT2000. Priced at £1295, features include CAT5 connections for multi-room installation and a Never Connected V2 power supply for the pre-amplifier.
Amongst a number of turntables on show was the Lumley Heliosphere, which is distributed in the UK by Metropolis Music and features two motors, an optional outboard power supply and a 75mm thick acrylic platter, all for £2750. Also part of Metropolis Music's portfolio, YG Acoustics showcased the aluminium-encased Anat Reference loudspeaker system. Designed wholly by computer, the system comes in three sections: a mid/treble box that sits atop a bass box, and an optional case that sits under the speaker for bass amplification.
Turning to UK manufacturers, Sussex-based Proteus garnered attention with its superb hand-built, all-valve Diamond integrated amplifier. The first to utilise the 'TechTube', this stainless steel amp boasts Art Deco styling and point-to-point wiring throughout.
