Gathering together an assortment of brands from the AWE portfolio, the three-day event attracted over 180 trade professionals and featured the unveiling of new products from Phillips, Xantech, Yamaha, Onkyo, Panasonic and Denon.
As if that wasn't enough to keep attendees busy, other featured brands keen to draw attention to their latest wares included industry favourites Pioneer, KEF, Cineversum, Lutron and Imerge.
There certainly was a wealth of technology on offer, and one of the main highlights came in the form of the official European launch of the Pronto TSU-9800 controller. Sporting a 6.4-inch VGA display and an optical rotary wheel, this latest innovation from Philips includes the exclusive ProntoScript programming functionality for two-way, real-time interaction and a dynamic user interface. Having launched over 100 new products at CEDIA US Expo 2008, and now exclusively distributed by AWE within the UK, multi-room and IR control company Xantech introduced new video, magnetic, audio, light and voltage sensors, plus a new board for the MRC88 control amplifier to offer meta data feedback.
Over on Yamaha’s stand, attendees were treated to first looks at the soon-to-be-launched RXV-1900 AV receiver and the DSP-Z7 AV amplifier, which while boasting a lower price tag, offers the same high-quality features as its big brother, the superb DSP-Z11. In addition to showcasing its flagship TX-NR906 AV receiver, which incorporates four HDMI inputs and outputs with built-in ISF video calibration, Onkyo introduced the PR-SC886 AV processor and continuing the trend, Denon presented its latest AV receivers, with the AWE demo room serving to highlight its Blu-ray transport.

Sure to be popular with consumers, a variety of flatscreens were on display from manufacturers Panasonic and Pioneer, with the former promoting the TX32LZD81 and TX37LZD81 plasma with Freesat and the new PTA-E3000 LCD projector, which boasts a contrast ratio of 60,000:1. The latter’s offerings included the slender Pioneer KRP-600M 60-inch Kuro monitor and the 50-inch KRP-500A Kuro plasma TV with external media box. A KRP-600A 60-inch version of this screen is exclusively available via AWE to CEDIA members that have signed the company’s CI distribution agreement and dealers were provided with details of Pioneer’s five-year warranty promotion.
Completing the brand line-up, Imerge demonstrated their new Tune XChange iPod integration software and a pre-release version of the latest ProntoScript Module for the MS-5000 media server, KEF’s series of KHT speakers for custom installation comprised an elegant exhibit, and lighting control manufacturer Lutron's Grafik Eye QS and the impressive Cineversum Blackwing 3 were also on display. Showing its support, trade association CEDIA had a presence at the Expo and provided details of the benefits available to members.
A popular draw at the CEDIA UK Expo 2008, the AWE Solutions House was painstakingly rebuilt at AWE HQ and provided a stylish demonstration of how each of these latest technologies can be integrated together in a custom-installed home. With brand representatives on hand to answer any questions, education was also high on the agenda, and over 300 sessions took place during the Expo, including extensive training by AWE on its Philips Pronto and focussed on the new Pronto TSU-9800, new PEP2 software (Pronto Edit Professional), Xantech products and Dragon programming for multi-room systems.
Adding in some light-hearted rivalry amongst attendees, a pool competition took place whereby the winner was whoever could pot all the striped balls in the fastest time without potting any other balls. Up for grabs was a bottle of champagne and the apt moniker of 'fastest potter of all the stripes without too many fouls champion', and victory was claimed by Joe Hall of JH Networks.

The AWE Expo proved to be a popular first event and as AWE’s Managing Director, Stuart Tickle comments, “The AWE EXPO surpassed expectations and proved a highly popular format for installers keen to see the latest products, take advantage of training and network with their industry peers.” Tickle went on to say, “AWE is always looking at innovative ways of engaging with the industry and providing beneficial events for customers that are valuable time away from the office or site. By working closely with key brands we are able to bring their latest innovations to market before anyone else and provide an opportunity for dealers to check out these new products in a non pressured environment and chat face to face with our staff and manufacturer reps.”
