Korean manufacturer and UK cable operator form 3D alliance
The arrangement will initially see Samsung furnish Virgin Media retail stores with a selection of models from its range of 3DTVs for demonstration purposes, echoing the similar partnership established in recent months between Sky and LG. According to Samsung’s official release, there will additionally be ‘more exciting projects between Virgin Media and Samsung 3D TV planned for 2011’.

Aleks Habdank, director of On Demand TV Services and Strategy at Virgin Media, said of the collaboration, “Samsung is the perfect partner to help us take 3D content to millions of homes across the UK. We’re excited to bring a taste of 3D to our customers in the comfort of their own homes with the launch of our 3D Movies On Demand service…and look forward to continuing our innovative work with Samsung over the coming months.”

Virgin Media subscribers can access the 3D Movies On Demand service through their existing V HD and V+ set top boxes, provided these are connected via HDMI to any 3D-enabled TV. In terms of content, the sole offering at the time of writing is StreetDance 3D, which will be available to subscribers up to a period of 24-hours for an on-demand service charge of £5.99.
