Last.fm starts charging for non-browser use
In a post on the company’s official blog dated February 7th, Last.fm’s Matthew Hawin stated that, “On the Last.fm website an ad-supported, free-to-listeners model is what supports our online radio services in the US, UK and Germany. In other markets and on emerging mobile and home entertainment devices, it is not practical for us to deliver an ad supported radio experience, but instead, we will migrate to what we believe is the highest quality, lowest cost ad-free music service in the world.”

The change will affect users of the last.fm iOS, Android and apps and those that regularly access the service through a range of online-enabled media hardware – a list that includes the Sonos wireless multi-room audio system, the Logitech Squeezebox, Roberts STREAM 83i internet radio and most recently the Marantz NA7004 network audio player, among many others. The service will main freely accessible via the company’s website in the US, the UK and Germany. US and UK users will also be able to access the service for no extra charge via Microsoft’s Xbox Live media portal and Windows Mobile 7 smartphone platform.
