Far safer than Arthur C. Clarke's psychotic space computer of the same name, Focus SB's new HAL is a 'Digital Home Automated Lighting and Control' system, developed for the domestic market as an affordable means to bring mood lighting and automatic switching of non-dimmable lighting as part of a scene into the home.
The multi-talented device can also exercise control over blinds, curtains, roof lights and concealed flatscreen TVs.
A modular solution, with simple design and self-commissioning capabilities, it's easy to install and operate – indeed, set lighting scenes can be edited by homeowners with minimal instruction – and is equally straightforward to expand. If desired, it can be even be hooked up with other intelligent devices, including AV, CCTV and fire safety systems.
Compatible with the majority of Focus SB's attractive plate range, HAL control pads, such as the example pictured, can be seamlessly blended into a range of interior décors, and are backed up by a portable infrared handset.
