CE market data from GfK Retail and Technology UK makes for sobering reading
July, however, saw a rapid decline in value of 10.8%. GfK note that the May/June boost had the greatest impact on purchases of larger screen sizes (37-inches) and offer-based sales, seemingly centred on volume that had been brought forward from the following months.
The conclusion offered by GfK is that this has subsequently increased price erosion in the flatscreen category, potentially spelling bad news for independents retailers. Elsewhere, the report notes that the total market value of all consumer durables was estimated at £45-billion between August 2009 and July 2010, 22% of which was made up by the consumer electronics sector (covering a total of 41 categories), second only to the 24% made up by DIY/Gardening
