Five months on from its initial launch, the ITV and BBC-backed Freesat platform appears to making good progress, with more than 100,000 Freesat decoders sold to date.
It’s thought that free-to-air HD broadcasts of major sporting events, including this year’s Wimbledon and the Beijing Olympics, as well the BBC Proms and movies such as Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake may have helped spur on its growing adoption by consumers.

Emma Scott, Freesat MD, remarked that, “There’s no denying how much people enjoy watching in high definition once they see it for themselves, and the success of Freesat proves that…We’ve done a great job so far, and we’re delighted that so many people are now satisfied Freesat homes.”

In the short term, future Freesat developments are said to include the release of a Freesat-supported DVR in November, additional manufacturing and retailer partnerships and the continued launch of new channels and services on a monthly basis.
