A recent Ofcom report has highlighted a surge in the sales of digitally-enabled TVs sold as 'second sets'.
The upshot of the boom is that, as of June 2009, 80% of the 60-million TV sets in the UK are capable of accessing digital broadcasts. Specifically, the Digital TV Progress Report for the second quarter of 2009 shows that 24.3-million secondary TV sets had been converted to digital by the end of June, up by 15% in a year, whilst, in total, nine out of 10 (89.8%) of main television sets are now connected to a digital decoder

There were also some interesting related findings regarding set-top boxes. Freeview set-top boxes accounted for over 680,000 sales in the quarter, but this was down 25% on last year as integrated digital TVs (IDTV) have become increasingly popular. By way of comparison, year-on-year IDTV sales were up by 590,000 or 41%. According to the report, cumulative sales of IDTVs have now reached almost 22-million and are likely to overtake those of set-top boxes (24-million) later this year.
