There is no denying the 3D is divisive technology. Its detractors will opine that it is kitsch and only a finite number of customers will be willing to take up the technology in their home. Its champions however will point to a technology that is still in its nascent stages yet has been adopted by all top television manufacturers, has re-emerged as the en vogue format for Hollywood blockbusters and has spawned dedicated channels for multiple genres.

Now we at SVI have our own opinions on the matter and whilst we have no prescient way of knowing what the future holds for 3D we can relay the facts help inform your own opinion making. Take the latest news from Samsung for example; it was announced last month that since its launch in March this year Samsung’s 3D Video-On-Demand service had received over 1-million content views in the UK alone. Available through Samsung’s range of lust inducing Smart TVs the 3D Video-On-Demand service currently has 28 types of free 3D content including films, music videos, children’s classics, documentaries and trailers from partner DreamWorks and we are told that by the end of 2011, 70 free 3D videos will be available through the ‘Explore 3D’ App available through the Smart TV use3r interface.

On this subject Andy Griffiths, Vice President, Consumer Electronics, Samsung UK said: “The popularity of the 3D Video-On-Demand service on our Smart TVs is testament to the quality viewing experience and content we offer customers. From our unique 3D colour technology to our 3D glasses with Bluetooth connectivity we’re committed to giving viewers the most immersive 3D experience possible. With more free 3D content to come, we will continue to develop our Smart TV offering to bring more excitement of 3D to the Smart TV platform ensuring more consumers access 3D content free and on-demand.’’
