Philips are throwing something new into the flat-panel TV mix with the launch of the Cinema 21:9 LCD. Boasting a 56-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio (hence the name), it eliminates the unattractive black bars that sit above and below movies in the 2.39:1 format on more standard displays, affording viewers a truly cinematic experience.

Featuring advanced formatting technology, TV programmes and video games whose native aspect ratio is usually 16:9 are adapted to fill the screen with no distortion, whilst content in the older 4:3 format can be automatically expanded to 16:9 (further expansion to 21:9 would apparently result in too much distortion).

Sporting five HDMI sockets, the Cinema 21:9 promises a response time of just 0.1-milliseconds, features an estimated Full HD resolution of 2560x1080p and, thanks to the presence of Philips' Ambilight on three of its sides, colours echoing those on screen will emanate from the top and sides. As if that wasn't enough, a matching 7.1 Blu-ray home cinema system will also be available to accompany the TV.

Launching in June, the Cinema 21:9 will be priced at around £3500.
