As De La Soul opined way back in 1990 three is a number that possess certain magical qualities and, innocent as we are here at the home of CI news, we can’t help but detect a slightly prurient undertone running through the song. Beyond the salacious connotations, however, it’s clear that De La Soul were onto something; three wise men, three good Star Wars films and now three products in Onkyo’s range of Spotify-enabled home cinema receivers.
Completing the triumvirate of home cinema excitement is the TX-NR809 which is aimed at the upper midrange of the home cinema receiver market and improves upon the already impressive credentials of TX-NR609 and TX-NR709. The 7.2-channel TX-NR809 offers 180W per channel power amplification as well as the latest connectivity and processing technology.
Surround-sound is delivered via Dolby Pro Logic IIz and Audyssey DSX technology which make setting up a home-cinema audio system a breeze. With eight HDMI inputs the TX-NR809 can handle a multiple HD playback devices and then direct them to two separate locations thanks to two HDMI outputs. To allow for further expansion the receiver offers 7.2-channel pre-amp outputs, as well as the ability to directly power Zone 2 speakers. In addition there are Zone 2 and Zone 3 pre-outs, each zone being equipped with a 12v trigger, making this a hugely flexible multi-room audio option plus a PC video input allows users to view video content directly from their computer.
The TX-NR809’s Ethernet connection enables access to Spotify Premium as well as Last.FM and free Internet radio via vTuner and audio streaming from a PC or media server in the home. On-board video processing is handled by two advanced technologies: HQV Vida VHD1900 and Qdeo technology by Marvell. Vida offers upscaling of all 480i/p, 576p, and 720p video sources to high-resolution 1080p. Qdeo, meanwhile, performs full 4K (3840 x 2160) upscaling of 1080p sources. So even though your client may not have a 4k display yet when it arrives this receiver will be ready for it thus making the TX-NR809 futureproof. Available now the TX-NR809 has a SRP of £1000.
