Though more commonly associated these days with home cinema hardware, Onkyo have introduced a trio of high-end Hi-Fi components under the ‘Reference Series’ banner that recalls the company’s two-channel roots.
First up is the £1500 C-7000R CD-player, which boasts a high precision clock linked to a crystal oscillator and a choice of either digital or analogue circuits – the former using a EI transformer and the latter a large toroidal type. Accompanying that is the £1700 P-3000R pre-amp, which features dual 32-bit Burr-Brown DACs for each channel, bi-amping facilities and a mix of analogue and digital inputs, including a AES/EBU connector and a USB port for use with PC-stored music libraries.
The highlight for audiophile traditionalists is meanwhile likely to be the £2500 M-5000R power amp (pictured), complete with generously sized, front-mounted peak Watt meters. Rated at 2 x 170W (into 4Ω), it’s based around a quad push-pull amp design that utilises two additional transistors for each channel, a pair of toroidal transformers and four 27,000μF capacitors for regulating current. As well as supporting bi-amping, an XLR audio input offers users the option of doubling its power by deploying it within a bridged transless configuration.
Also of note is the way in which all three make use of Onkyo’s ‘Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry, or DIDRC, which aims to combat the distortion and interference effects of unwanted high frequencies above 100kHz on sound signals.
