The increasingly crowded media server category has seen the introduction of yet another contender, with Passive Technologies’ unveiling of its new Evolve series.
At the heart of the range lies the main lifeStation media system - an Intel i3 processor-powered standalone and/or networked component with 2GB of RAM, which runs Evolve’s custom media management utility on top of a Microsoft Windows home server install. Internal storage comes from a 60GB solid-state drive, supplemented by a conventional 2.5-inch drive for storing content locally. As well as the now standard media server inclusions of an import-enabled Blu-ray drive, high-quality audio hardware, remote access and metadata lookups via Ethernet and CI-friendly control options (modules are available for Apple devices, Crestron systems and the Philips Pronto family), it also features a pair of DVB-S2 satellite tuners and dual DVB-T terrestrial tuners, making it a fully-fledged PVR, plus support for seemingly every audio and video file format that users could possibly require.
Also available is the lifeStore storage enclosure, which comes equipped with hot swappable drive bays in 4TB, 10TB and 20TB versions, plus the lifeStream – a compact client player powered by an Intel Atom processor with Nvidia ION video processing that runs Evolve’s specially developed software from within Windows 7 64-bit edition. With a 1TB lifeStation configured for single-room use available from £2808 plus VAT, Evolve’s solution comes across as a fairly comprehensive and competitively-priced solution for feature-craving power users.
