Three years on from its debut, Bowers & Wilkins’ attention-grabbing Zeppelin speaker system is now available in a re-engineered version that supports Apple’s AirPlay media streaming protocol.
To the uninitiated, AirPlay-enabled hardware can wirelessly play the contents of any iTunes music libraries stored a remote PC or Mac over a local network, complete with accompanying metadata. In addition to that, iPod Touches, iPhones and iPads running iOS version 4.2 or higher can wirelessly stream their audio outputs directly to any AirPlay product - with those two functions combined, users can thus put together an ad hoc multi-room audio system by situating multiple AirPlay receivers around the home.
Streaming aside, the Zeppelin Air is also now a fully active 2.1 speaker system equipped with five redesigned drivers, which are supplied with power from B&W-developed onboard amplification rated at 4 x 25W and 1 x 50W. Other hardware features include a DSP-assisted dynamic EQ function, upgraded 24-bit/96 kHz DACs and the company’s dimpled ‘Flowport’ bass ports, which help to aid airflow and hence lessen unwanted compression effects at high volumes.
Otherwise, the overall shape of the unit and distinctive dock connector (compatible with all iOS devices, post iPod Classic and 2nd generation Nano) remains much the same. The port array includes a series of optical, USB and analogue inputs, plus a composite video output for playing any iPod/iPhone-stored video on an external display. The Zeppelin Air will be available from March, priced at £499.99.
