New from Arcam is the irDock, which replaces the rDock. Described as, “The first 'audiophile' dock for iPod worthy of the name”, and designed for use with Arcam's Solo and AV components, it is compatible with iPod and iPhone and builds upon the success of its predecessor thanks to an array of upgrades.
Employing audiophile-grade components, a high-quality cast aluminium enclosure to minimise RF interference and a vibration-reducing die-cast base, the model's new features include full infrared remote control of Apple's gadgets – access coming via an included mini handset, Arcam handsets or a programmed universal remote – and the pass-through of video content, thanks to the incorporation of Apple's video authentication chip. Also in place is a built-in audio pre-amp with high-performance op-amps and low-noise double regulated power supplies.
Elsewhere, a charging on/off button has been included, preventing the damage to batteries that can occur with 'charge always on' docking solutions, whilst connectivity stretches to S-Video and Composite outputs, allowing iPod-stored photos or movies to be shown on a TV or other display. Importantly, connection to the iPod itself is via its line-out connector, bypassing the headphone amp to deliver the best audio possible.
Priced at £150, the irDock is available now.
